Qualified domestic relations order

The court order that divides an American employer retirement plan when a relationship ends. A divorce decree saying the right thing is not automatically one, and a plan is not bound by an order that fails the statutory requirements. A payment made under one avoids the extra 10% tax an early withdrawal would otherwise carry.
